Dr. Albert "Gene" Eugene Carlson

Dr. Gene Carlson, 88, of Albany died Thursday at Samaritan Evergreen Hospice House. Gene was born in Kansas City, Missouri to Albert Eric and Marie L. (Quarfourth) Carlson. He served in the US Navy as a Medical Corpsman during WWII, and then attended Wheaton College on the GI Bill. He received his medical degree from the University of Kansas, and his Ophthalmology credentials from the University Of Oregon Medical School, (OHSU). Gene married Janet Anderson on August 24th, 1951 in Kansas City. Following the completion of his Ophthalmology Residency, Gene and Jan moved to Albany in 1958. Gene established a medical practice that spanned 44 years. He had the distinction of being the first medical specialist of any kind in Linn County.

Gene was involved in many local organizations including the Albany School Board, LBCC Board, Albany General Hospital Board, American Legion, Kiwanis, and American Medical Association. He was proud to serve on the Hospital Board during the planning and construction of the hospital's new wing. Gene served as an Elder and Deacon at the United Presbyterian Church in Albany.

Gene served as a missionary surgeon to India in 1973 and 1974. He and Jan enjoyed traveling with the Christian Medical Society. He enjoyed tennis, golf and downhill skiing, and was an original stockholder in Hoodoo Ski Bowl. He was an active member of the Albany Tennis Club, and served as Director of the Willamette Valley Junior Tennis Tournament for many years. Gene especially enjoyed singing in the church choir, and did so for many years with his wife Jan.

Left to honor Gene and remember his love include his wife Jan of Albany; sons Leif of Coos Bay, Thor and his wife Debra of Leander, Texas, and Sten and his wife Stephanie of Albany; daughter Heather Bristow and her husband Bryan of Albany; grandchildren Sterling, Snowden, Trillium, Charles, Alicia, Finn, Anders, and Bjorn; brother Kenneth Carlson of Maryland; and sister Evonne Young of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his sister Sharon Carlson.

A celebration of Gene's life will be at 10am Saturday February 13th at the Albany United Presbyterian Church, followed by a reception at the church and private interment at Oakville Cemetery.
