Obituary

Milford Orval Smucker, 77, formerly of Harrisburg, OR, died peacefully on November 20, 2017, at the Mennonite Home in Albany, OR.

He was born on October 13, 1940, at the Albany General Hospital to Orval and Lena Smucker. He was the sixth child in a family of seven. He grew up on the family farm near Harrisburg. He attended Alford and Harris schools. As a youth, he accepted Jesus as his Saviour. He attended both the Harrisburg and Brownsville Mennonite Churches in his lifetime.

Milford had many good times with friends and cousins. He loved people and travel. He could talk to anyone, anywhere, and at any time. Susie never knew who Milford would bring home just to talk or to show them the lift they used for Todd or his dad’s cougar rug. He had a talent for asking slightly obtuse questions to get the answer he was looking for without just asking outright. Many times after a family gathering, there would be a crowd around Milford listening to him tell stories. Even in the last years as Alzheimers took its toll, his personality still shone through. Written in his chart at the Mennonite Home was the phrase, “pleasant, with lots of sarcasm.”

On a trip back east, Milford met Susan Wenger of Manheim, PA. They were married on May 17, 1969. They celebrated 48 years by going to the coast for a day. He had two children. A son, Todd, was born in 1970 and a daughter, Patricia, in 1974.

Milford was a farmer. He enjoyed working alongside others. He gave many boys and men a job over the years. He liked equipment and didn’t want to part with anything because “he might need it someday!” He also enjoyed buying something, and then maybe trading it for something else, and usually ending up with what he actually wanted.

Milford was preceded in death by his mom, Lena, in 1990; his son, Todd, in 1994; his dad, Orval, in 2000; his brother, Wilton, in 2004; his sister, Wilma in 2007, and his brother, James, in 2016.

Milford is survived by his wife, Susie, his daughter, Trish (Richard) McCormick, three grandchildren Trenton, Aubrey, and Cameron McCormick all of Halsey, OR. He is also survived by three sisters. Luella Yoder of Chicago, Illinois; Allene Smucker-Klassen of Albany, OR; and Nadine Young of Cresskill, New Jersey.

The family would like to thank all those who visited, prayed, and showed their care over these past months.
