Obituary

November 8, 1927 - February 3, 2018
Virginia “Ginny” McManigal Player passed away peacefully on February 3, 2018, at Evergreen Hospice House in Albany, Oregon, surrounded by her family.
She was born on November 8, 1927, to Ben and Elizabeth (Turner) McManigal in Norfolk, Nebraska.

When Ginny was 14, she and her mother moved to Portland, where Ginny attended and graduated from Washington High School. She went to work at International Harvester in Portland, where she met John “Joe” Player, and they were married on June 19, 1948.

Joe and Ginny moved to Coquille, Oregon in June of 1950, and remained there until Joe died in 1997.
Ginny worked after the births of her four children. She held many office positions over the years at St. James Episcopal Church, Washington Grade School, and in the Coos County Tax Dept. and District Court until she retired in 1989. Ginny loved working but especially her job as a District Court Bailiff.

In 2013, she moved to Albany to be closer to her children. She attended St. Albans Episcopal Church and enjoyed her PEO chapter as well as monthly luncheons with her book club. She also enjoyed serving at St Mary’s soup kitchen in Albany on Friday nights. Ginny continued to live in her own home and remained independent until she died.

Some of her many interests included painting, knitting, playing bridge, collecting antiques and purses, golfing, and traveling this great country. She will be remembered as a spunky fun-loving friend to many and will be missed.

She is survived and loved by her children, Jan and Bill Grant, John Player III, Mary and Mike Murphy, and Patty and Mike Nordyke. She will be missed by her grandchildren, Jennifer and Mike Clark, Brian and Tracie Grant, Alison Nordyke, Megan Murphy and Xavi Lopez, Casey and Sean Spencer, Jessica and Zack Martinez, and John Player IV. Her great grandchildren are Kara Clark, Kristin Clark, Haydin Rilling, Micah Schulze, Logan Schulze, Christopher Martinez, Hannah Martinez and Riley Spencer.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. on February 17, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Albans Episcopal Church, 1730 Hill Street SE, Albany, Oregon.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Albany General Hospital and especially Evergreen Hospice House for their compassionate and loving care of our mother.
